Specialist Teaching

Why work with a Specialist Teacher?

 As a Specialist Teacher and a registered qualified test user through the British Psychological Society, I am qualified to carry out curriculum-based and psychometric assessments that lead to the design of tailored, personalised teaching programmes to support children with specific learning difficulties (SpLDs).

When working with children with SpLDs, it is fundamental to design programmes that are highly structured, cumulative, sequential and involve multisensory learning techniques to maximise recall and retention of the concepts being taught.  Overlearning is vital to embed teaching within a child's memory and sessions are always interactive, engaging and fun.  As a child consolidates their knowledge of key literacy and numeracy concepts they grow in confidence, aware they have a personal toolkit of strategies and techniques to use to link new knowledge to existing and with which to continue their development.
Teaching a child how to use their strengths to build upon their areas for development encourages increasing independence, resilience and metacognitive skills, all of which are important when transitioning to secondary school.

Who might benefit?

If your child is struggling in any of the following areas, a specialist teaching programme may be of benefit:

- decoding regular words (phonics);

- reading irregular words (HFWs/curriculum words);

- reading accuracy and fluency;

- reading comprehension;

- spelling;

- writing: structuring sentences / ability to document thoughts coherently on paper / speed of writing;

- handwriting;

- recall of basic numeracy facts and processes (operations, times tables, number bonds);

- understanding of maths reasoning questions;

- organisational skills; and

- study skills / exam preparation.
